The student speakers for the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Winter 2008 Commencement Ceremonies have been chosen. Rezarta Haxhillari will represent the School of Management (SOM) and College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), and Tony Lin will represent the School of Education (SOE) and College of Arts, Science and Letters (CASL).
The University of Michigan-Dearborn's Department of Mathematics and Statistics is currently working on a three-year project to decorate the second floor of CASL with mathematical art. One of the planned projects, the Alumni Wall, is a large tile mosaic that will be located across from the elevators.
Starting next fall, communications students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will have a new option for a major. The Journalism and Screen Studies (JASS) program has been developed over the past year due to a belief that the two fields should converge.
University of Michigan-Flint's Interium Chancellor, Jack Kay, appeared at the University of Michigan-Dearborn's BorgWarner Auditorium to give a lecture on hate on the Internet. The lecture was part of the UM-D's Chancellor's lecture series. Kay also serves as the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UM-F, and is also a communications professor at the school.
Last Saturday in Lansing, eight students from the University of Michigan-Dearborn were honored at Michigan Campus Compact's (MCC) 12th annual Outstanding Student Service Awards celebration. Students Henda Al-Biatty, Amal Alsamawi, Cardi DeMonaco, Jr., Adam Harris, Amal Hassan, Zeshahn Humayun and Kristen Lewis were given with the Heart and Soul Award, and Nabila Ikram won the Commitment to Service Award for her work as president of the Student Environmental Association and the Focus the Nation event.
